Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) ESBLs that hydrolyze extended-spectrum cephalosporins with an oxyimino side chain are first detected in 1979, and the prevalence of bacteria expressing ESBL has been gradually increasing in acute care hospitals. When these agents were threatened by the rapid emergence of β-lactamases, β-lactamase-stable agents were developed, as well as potent β-lactamase inhibitors (BLIs). In this introductory description of the β-lactams, the most commonly available β-lactams and BLIs will be presented, with a brief summary of their general characteristics.
